A characteristic feature of a Santal village is a sacred grove (known as the Jaher or Jaherthan) on the edge of the village where many spirits live and where a series of annual festivals take place. It is the place of worship where the community gathers and offers prayers to nature, to the Maranguburu and to the Jaheraayo. Men can only enter the grove wearing dhoti and traditional towels. Women do not participate in those poojas. This area conserves many indigenous tree species with numerous herbs, shrubs and climbers. People are prohibited from harming the trees in any manner. Not even tiny branches must be cut. Anyone who breaks this sacred rule is punished by the villagers. A Jaherthan cannot be destroyed or replaced.

By securing the life-sustaining goods and services which biodiversity provide to us, the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity can provide significant benefits to our health.
